Organized by Simon Fraser University’s School of Communication, OpenMedia.ca, and the Vancouver Public Library, this year’s MDD will focus on two themes: information control and aboriginal voices. The program features two full days of public events including a film screening of "Terms and Conditions May Apply" (2013), hands-on workshops, a media fair, and numerous panel discussions on the state of Canada’s media systems. Media Democracy Days – a long running media reform conference – will showcase two keynote speakers this year to help expand on the themes of information control and aboriginal voices: • BC’s Information and Privacy Commissioner, Elizabeth Denham, who will speak on the importance of privacy safeguards in an era of data mining and mass surveillance. • Jennifer David, author of Original People. Original Television. The Launching of the Aboriginal Peoples Television Network and one of the founding members of APTN. MDD’s programming comes in response to the events of the past year – specifically, the revelations of the US government’s NSA spying program, stories of whistleblowers such as Edward Snowden or Private Manning, and unprecedented levels of aboriginal resistance in the wake of proposed pipeline projects and the #IdleNoMore movement. “It’s been quite a year for those concerned about democracy,” said Dr. Kathleen Cross, chair of the Media Democracy Days organizing committee and Assistant Professor of Communication at SFU. Dr. Cross continued, “We have seen numerous cases where information that should be public is being restricted, while information that should be private is exploited. These events have demonstrated the importance of investigating who collects and controls information, and for what purposes. Now, more than ever, we need media that are not afraid to ask these question.” MDD’s events will host over 30 media makers, academics, and community organizers talking on issues ranging from cyber-bullying to environmental journalism. See www.mediademocracydays2013.ca for a full list of events. MDD 2013 is a partnership of SFU’s School of Communication, OpenMedia.ca, and The Vancouver Public Library, and is sponsored in part by Vancity.
