Out of Left Field: Teaching Public Sociology in a Neo-Liberal World by sachrsec@sfu.ca Dr Corey Dolgon, Professor of Sociology and Director of Community Based Learning, Stonehill College, Massachusetts Burnaby Campus, Academic Quadrangle, Room 5067 (Ellen Gee Common Room) Brown bag lunch with light refreshments served Free and open to the public Abstract Public Sociology has become all the rage—at least in the United States. Yet its success as a radical and transformative social practice seems handicapped by professional and institutional conditions. Professional academic life requires a presentation and packaging that simultaneously minimizes the field’s historical roots while limiting the scholarly and pedagogical possibilities. Institutionally, neo-liberalism enforces a depoliticizing and commodification that reduces “the public” to hyper individualized corporate subjects competing in the free market. This presentation will document these conditions and suggest various ways to challenge these conservative forces and promulgate a public sociology focused on social justice and human rights. events.sfu.ca/ViewItem.html?cal_item_id=13499&dtwhen=2456749METRO VANCOUVER CALENDAR OF EVENTSMETRO VANCOUVER VIBES SOCIAL CLUBMETRO VANCOUVER LIVE CHATPOP ENTERTAINMENT CHANNELMETRO VANCOUVER SMARTPHONE DIRECTORY CLICK HERE
